Daytona State production of Godspell pays tribute to those lost in 9/11 tragedy

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Feb. 4, 2010) – Daytona State College’s School of Music, Entertainment and Art presents: "Godspell,” a spirited musical in which the talents of a few students pay tribute to those who perished on September 11, 2001. Traditionally, Godspell is set in a junkyard, a schoolyard, or in the film version, in and around Manhattan, with one scene performed on the top of the World Trade Center. In most productions, the disciples and Jesus are dressed as hippies to emphasize the spirit of love and trust. Jesus traditionally wears a Superman shirt.

“On September 11, 2001, the world watched in disbelief, horror and anguish as a jetliner flew into the Pentagon in Washington, another crashed in Pennsylvania and two flew directly into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center,” commented Godspell Director Robert Arcuri. “I can honestly say that that day was one of the worst days of my life as an American, a New Yorker and a friend of some that died. I still mourn. It is out of this tragedy that I came up with the concept of setting our production of Godspell in 2001, amid the tragic destruction that came to be called Ground Zero. The disciples will mirror the look of today’s East Village youth, and our Jesus, rather than wear a Superman emblem emblazoned on his shirt, will wear four simple letters: FDNY.”
