DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Feb. 24, 2010) - Led by the performance of freshman, Mitsuki Katahira (Tokyo, Japan), the Daytona State College’s women’s golf team won the Jacksonville University Golf Classic by 14 strokes and set a tournament scoring record in the process. After carding 73 in the opening round, Katahira shot a 1-under 71 to win the individual title by 2 strokes. This is the fourth team title for the Lady Falcons this year. Daytona State (596 +20) finished 14 strokes better than 2nd place Stetson University (610 +34) and 29 strokes better than 3rd place University of Cincinnati (625 +49). Samford University (631 +55) and Florida Gulf Coast University (635 +59) rounded out the top five in the 11 team field.
First round leader Amy West (Valrico, FL) finished 3rd with scores of 69-78. West set a tournament record in the 1st round with her 3-under par 69. Other finishers for Daytona State include Jennifer Gartin (Port St. Lucie, FL) who finished in 6th place with scores of 76-76, Ericka Schneider (Bradenton, FL) who finished tied for 12th with scores of 80-76, Ashley Mooney (Port St. Lucie, FL) who finished tied for 16th with scores of 83-75, and Cassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, FL) who finished tied for 40th with scores of 85-82.
The Lady Falcons will be back in action at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational hosted by Rollins College March 8 and 9 at Alaqua Country Club in Lake Mary, FL.
Daytona State College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Florida Community College Athletics Association Mid-Florida Conference. The Falcons currently compete in seven Division I NJCAA sports including Men's and Women's Basketball, Baseball, Fast-Pitch Softball, Women's Golf and Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving.
