CBI to offer Skills for Supervising workshop: A focus on People and Productivity

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Dec. 2, 2011) - New supervisors may feel overwhelmed by the tasks and responsibilities that come with the job. Having already delivered the highly successful Skills for Supervising workshop to more than 760 individuals from various local employers, the Center for Business and Industry at Daytona State College announces a new four-session supervisory skills development workshop starting Jan. 26, 2012.

Skills for Supervising will combine short instruction periods, numerous group exercises, experience sharing and role playing to enhance the learning experience. Today more than ever, supervisors must align the power of people and knowledge with their organization’s strategic goals. In order to do this, supervisors need personal leadership skills to keep employees on track and moving in the right direction; coaching skills to help individuals and teams progress more quickly toward goals; and communication skills to make the case for change in a way that builds excitement and inspires commitment. The titles for some of the more than 30 workshop exercises include: Best Friend Now Works For Me, Good Worker Wants Out, He Is a Relative of The Owner and He is Always Late, Negative and Positive Impact People, Older Worker Retired on the Job, Getting Customer Requirements, Gantt Charts, Fish Bones, Weighted Voting, Defining Problems, Say it In a Gentler Way, Performance Feedback and Counseling. Workshops are offered several times a year and can be customized for on-site delivery.

The workshop is taught by Ray C. Huther. As a manufacturing operations manager with Xerox, Huther spent more than half of his 30-year career in international operations working with small Brazilian affiliate companies. After retiring from Xerox, he became a senior consultant in two training consortiums of Fortune 50 companies established to train their suppliers in Total Quality Management (TQM) and the processes typically associated with such organizational change.

Classes meet on consecutive Thursdays beginning Jan. 26 and continue through Feb. 16, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in Bergengren Hall (bldg. 110), room 249 on the college's Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Boulevard. Tuition is $295 per attendee. Prepayment is required.
